Laptop upgrading

Today boss approved me to upgrad laptop. New one is Dell Latitude D600 (CNET review). Configuration was offered below:

20906166-2-120-0.gif

Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 1.8GHz (14.1″ SXGA)
1024MB (2×512) DDR SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA (5400RPM)
8X DVD+RW
Dell Wireless(TM) 1450 (802.11a/b/g) MiniPCI Card
TrueMobile(TM) 300 Blue-tooth Module
Windows XP Home Edition SP1 (Of course I won’t spend money on needless software … any windows edition)

It is known that Dell product quality is not as good as other laptop brand like IBM or SONY. Restricted by limited budget and tough procurement policy I have to choose this model. That also means I have to wait for another 2 years, till Aug 2006 to have the next upgrade.

During past 7 years I have used IBM, SONY, Acer and Compaq laptop. The best choice is SONY deservedly although it is made by Xiao Riben. For most ppl laptop is just a equipment for programming, writing and other working usage but for PC hardware fans. Usability is more important than other features for common users. Without doubt SONY is the leader in this field but their product cost is also as high as its quality. I don’t think that Dell product can be called as ‘Well-Designed’. My friend works with Dell never says Dell product is good but they are all ‘Measure up industry standard’. Is it a graceful annotation? On the other hand Dell does offer pretty good config set and warranty service. Considering the rate D600 is worth to spent limited budget.

Peak season coming now

As title shows I have to put down my camera for some days. Current two projects I am ownning both enter into final acceptance period and one of them will be refreshed in one month. During peak seaon I will fall into lots of contracts, documents, talkings & negotiations. In China project management is different. Except neccesary skill and technique you must have addtional relationship management skill to deal with client, partner and team member. 8 hrs is far from sufficient daily working time. As far as private life time you have give up for winning contract and make it succesful.

Time… It is precious, we lose it very quickly, and we cannot get it back.
Time… Take care of it, or it will eat you alive.

Many times in travel during peak season I had to try to recall where I was.

Time… Don’t abuse it, because it will surely abuse you!

It is actuality if you are working in service organizations in China even if they are applying pretty different project management methodologies at any location or any business.

Windows Product News

A so-called most secured version of Windows - Windows XP SP2 is on the way to RTM. A fantastic demonstration was present in MGB 2004. It seems really cool. All Microsoft employees are encourged to install the lastst release candidate of SP2. Although it is called as ServicePack but I think it is a broad new things include New security mechanism, new added firewall , improved IE features and many fresh functions and updats. Usually I will apply this kind of “ServicePack” after RC2. It still in internal testing phase but in case you are interested in the new thing I can fetch it for you.

Some portals published news about Microsoft Antivirus software were derived from a technical leader of Microsoft’s security project in France said. The content is about leaking out of antivirus software and it will be a standalone product. I do not agree these rumors because the software was demo in general session of MGB and a high level VP said it will be integrated into operating system but not appearing as a standalone product. Since microsoft should continue persistent product strategy - utility component is a part of operating system, apparently antivirus software is on this situation.
